ZIPPER STRUCTURE AND PROCESS
1.1 Slider
Slider is a main part of zipper, and currently slider is becoming more and more important part of decorative element on the cloth. Basic zipper slider will be sort as auto-lock slider, non-lock slider, semi auto-lock slider, reversible slider and cap-lock slider, etc. Different slider will be applied into various zipper to meet various product requirement. Zipper slider is mainly made by zinc alloy, copper and plastic.

1.2 Surface treatment of slider
Mainly slider surface treatment could be as follow: roll spray paint, hang spray paint, roll electro-plating and hang electro-plating. Hang paint and electro-plating require more human labor however will be better visual performance.

2.1 Zipper chain
Zipper chain is the main body of a whole piece of zipper. Zipper chain can be sort as 3 types: Nylon zipper chain, Delrin zipper chain, and Metal zipper chain. Nylon zipper is soft and light in weight, delrin zipper chain is visually better, better in anti-rubbing performance and metal zipper is tougher and better fit with heavy appication. 3 types of zipper could be applied in various cloth, bags, shoes, out door wear and equipment, etc. Zipper tape is mainly made with polyester or cotton.

2.2 Chain process
Except dyeing process, currently heat transfer printing process is growing very fast, various kinds of pattern drawing can be applied on the zipper chain. SGS also can apply lace tape, TPU coated zipper. Composite film like reflective film can also be applied on zipper.

3.1 Top stop
Top stop function as stoper on the top side of zipper to prevent slider from slip out of zipper. Functionaly there will be 2 kinds of top stop: anti-sliping stop and easy handling stop. For anti-sliping stop, slider can not be changed or removed after top stop is installed; easy handling stop allows user to change slider for open end zipper, which is easy to repair.

3.2 Types of top stop
There will be various types of top stop, it can be made with aluminium, brass (stamped slice material); plastic injection type; and also melted polyester material with is shaped with high freiquency. Various type of top stop is applied to different customer requirements.

4.1 Buttom stop
Buttom stop is a stoper to prevent slider from slipping out from buttom of the zipper.

4.2 Types of buttom stop
There will be various types of buttom stop, it can be made with aluminium, brass (stamped slice material); plastic injection type; and also melted polyester material with is shaped with high freiquency. Various type of top stop is applied to different customer requirements.

5.1 Seperate Pin&Box
Seperate Pin&Box is located at zipper’s bottum part for open end zipper, it allows zipper to seperate and close.

5.2 Type of Seperate Pin&Box
Seperate Pin& Box is mainly made with plastic injection or zinc alloy casting. For zinc alloy parts is harder than plastic parts, and plastic is smooth and better in anti-corrosion.


Zipper Classification
There are 6 types of basic zipper classifications, including closed end, open end, two-way open end, “O” type, “X” type and “R” type zipper.

1.Closed end zipper: Fastener which does not permit the complete separation of the two stringers. Including 1 slider, zipper chain, top stop and buttom stop. Mostly used on pocket and trousers’ front fly upon the cloth.

2.Open end zipper: Fastener having a special fitment at the bottom end of each stringer in place of the bottom stop, so as to permit the two stringers to be completely separated and re-assembled at will when the slider is in the fully open position. Including 1 slider, zipper chain, top stop and seperate pin & box. Mostly used on front fly of top wear, seperateable sleeve, sofa cover or mattress cover.

3.Two-way open end zipper: Fastener fitted with two sliders that operate with equal facility in either direction. Mostly used on front fly of top wear.

4.“O” Type zipper: top and buttom is not seperatalbe, with 2 buttom stop and 2 sliders head to head. Usually used on luggage cases.

5.“X” Type zipper: top and buttom is seperatealbe, with 2 sliders tail to tail.

6.“R” Type Zipper: top stop is seperateable, with 2 sliders tail to tail.
 

Little Hints:

Zipper Size: After the slider is pulled into the top of the zipper, zipper size is defined as follow:
1)the length from top of the slider to the end of buttom stop for closed end zipper;
2)the length from top of the slider to the end of Pin&Box for one way open end zipper;
3)the length from top of the higher slider to the end of lower slider when the lower slider is pulled into the buttom of the zipper.

Kensin test for zipper(Magnetic test) : Kensin Test is a process to check for the broken needle left in the cloth in order of protection of end cusumer. If the cloth need to be kensin tested, zipper manufacturer need to be informed.

Washing condition: High strength washing process may damage zipper, so we recommend washing factory to check the zipper to make sure that the zipper is properly closed, zipper slider and puller shall be protected and covered. Open end Pin&Box re-enforcemence part can be made with PU and Cloth tape, PU tape may not pass high strength washing process, SGS usually choose to use Cloth tape.

Anti-corruption of zipper: for some cloth will need enzyme washing process, which will require zipper to be anti-acidity; some cloth need to be anti-slatfog, which will require zipper to be anti-alkaline. Especially for zipper slider’s electro-plating, either it to be anti-acidity or anti-alkaline which is implementated by protective film on the surface.

Color fastness: there are sevral types of color fastness, regularly there will be color fastness of water and rubber or under normal machine washing condition. There will be some special products will require high color fastness of sublimation. High color fastnesss of sublimation will require special dyestuff and need high strength dying process to achieve.

Dimensional Stability after ironing: 90% of zipper tape is made of polyester, during production, diemention is formed through ironing and stabled during prodution. However, when zipper is applied on the cloth, due to the different structiure of textile, the diemention changing rate is defferent, after high temerature ironing, cloth will be crumpled. So during ironing of cloth, temperature, moist is important, direct ironing shall be avoided.  

Lighting source: zipper is dyed under certain light source. under defferent lighting source, slightly visial defference will occure. So it is also very important for buyer to clarify the shop lighting source, mainly there will be D65, TL84, CWF, UV, TL83, U30, F/A, etc.
